What Is Disposable Fashion?

What is disposable fashion? Have you ever bought something and thought to yourself, “This is so cheap, even if I wear it just once it was worth the cost”? It’s called disposable fashion and it is taking a toll on us. Watch today’s video for some easy tips you can follow to help make a difference. (Click image below to watch video.)

What Is Disposable Fashion?

Maybe this is a concept you have heard of, or maybe you have never heard of it before, but what is disposable fashion? Disposable fashion is everywhere. It is an item that we purchase thinking that this is so cheap that even if I only wear it one time, it pays for itself. Disposable fashion is produced on a low quality / low cost / high volume scale.

I remember when these retailers first started popping up. It was great to be in high school and be able to go to the mall and find things I could actually afford that were cute! Fast forward to college and after college (when you are broke and burdened with student loan debt) and disposable fashion meant you could afford to keep up with the trends.

At first glance, it seems like a really wonderful concept. You’re spending $6-$8 at a time on a shirt. You could get a dress for $20 and spend $10-$15 for a pair of jeans or pants. So what if it started getting holes in it? You wore it once or twice, it didn’t cost that much anyway, so pass it on or throw it away. It has served its purpose with you and you can always go get more because it is so cheap right?!

The more I read and research on this, the more I am starting to realize that as this disposable clothing trend continues, we are going to have to find new ways to keep up with it. And I don’t mean wearing and using more clothes, I mean finding places to put the mass amount of textiles produced. Here are a few statistics:

  • We have seen a 400% increase in the amount of clothing consumed per year in the last couple decades
  • The average American throws away nearly 70 pounds of textiles per year. It goes directly into the landfill.

We are going to have a hard time keeping up with this if it continues at the rate that it is. I don’t think it is realistic to ask you to stop shopping, but I think there are a few things that we can all do to help make a lessen our environmental impact:

  • Swap, don’t shop. Check our website or Facebook page for upcoming clothing swaps in your area or click on the “side hustle” tab on our website to find out how to start your own.
  • Buy secondhand or thrift. Extend the lifespan of items that have already been produced by shopping thrift stores in your area
  • Repurpose textiles. Turn old shirts into pillows, or rags into rugs. Search Pinterest for ideas on how to repurpose old textiles and prevent them from going into the landfill.

So, now that you know what you can do to begin making a difference, check out more Trendy Trade videos to see what to expect at upcoming events, get comfortable with the idea of a clothing swap and see the great things that you can walk away with!

What is Fast Fashion?

What is fast fashion? The fashion industry used to have two seasons a year — one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. Now, there are 52 seasons a year! Can you keep up? Here are four tips to dealing with fast fashion in a sustainable and ethical way. (Click the image below to watch video.)

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

With today being the first of a new season, (happy spring!) how many fashion seasons do you think there are in a year? 2? 4? 52?

I heard this fact recently and it blew me away. The fashion industry used to have two seasons a year — one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. Now, there are 52 seasons a year! That means basically one fashion season a week.

If you are a shopaholic, maybe that is good news for you! But if you are like me, that leaves you feeling incredibly overwhelmed. It’s just something that seems impossible to keep up with.

What is Fast Fashion?

By the time you buy something and wear it, it’s already outdated – who can keep up with that? It’s called “fast fashion” – and it’s the industry’s way of keeping you constantly shopping, buying things and making purchases.

The problem with this is that in order for us to consume (purchase) the clothing as quickly as it comes out, it needs to be at a price that is affordable. So we are seeing low prices on clothing so that everyone can keep up with it.

Here is the thing that we don’t see: the low prices on clothing comes at a high price. If the clothing is being manufactured and sold at a low price and is still profitable, then what is the cost of the material and the labor associated with putting the garments together?

It’s something to think about and if you want to dig into this deeper, there are a couple really good resources I would encourage you to check out:

  • Factory45 supports fashion designers that want to produce high-quality, ethically sourced garments
  • Fashion Revolution is an organization that has made it their mission to encourage transparency in the production of fashion and improve the conditions that laborers work under

Tips to Dealing with Fast Fashion

In the meantime, what are some things that we can do to look for another option to fast fashion? If you are like me and you don’t want to make an attempt at keeping up with it, here is what you can do:

  • Buy good quality, long lasting, sustainable garments. Look for companies that are transparent and ethical with their material and labor sourcing. You may pay more for this now, but it will last longer. And it will also promote healthy working conditions for laborers and the planet.
  • Dress for your own style, rather than trying to keep up with the trends. Check out our video on 3 Tips to Reclaim Your Style if you need a little help.
  • Educate yourself on the sourcing of material and labor conditions. Fashion Revolution is a great organization that promotes transparency in the fashion industry and is committed to improving labor conditions for workers. Follow them on social media.
  • Follow and promote sustainable practices such as clothing swaps. Trendy Trade is in several cities on the West Coast and growing. We would invite you to check out our list of events and join us at an upcoming clothing swap near you.

Minimalism and Sustainability in Fashion Clothing Swaps

Minimalism and sustainability in fashion are concepts built-in to Trendy Trade Clothing Swap Events. In this video, we’ll explain how you can help be more socially responsible and lessen your environmental impact. (Click image below to watch video.)

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

Although clothing swaps don’t directly center around the idea of sustainability and minimalism, a huge concept behind why we do what we do is helping women make the most of what they have; which in a small way is minimalistic and sustainable.

Recently, I watched a documentary on Minimalism and it really opened my eyes to the amount of waste that is generated by this consumeristic society that has been evolving for decades—not just the waste of the product itself, but the waste that floods this planet as a byproduct of production. The documentary goes into a lot more detail about it and I would highly recommend catching it if you’re curious — You can catch it on Netflix or Amazon and it’s called Minimalism.

I have always considered myself a frugal person, it was just how I was raised and think I live more simply than most, but the documentary got me thinking about what I can do to further live a minimalistic and simple life, even more than I try to do now.

It got me thinking about how much stuff I bring in to my life, STILL — unnecessarily — and how I can truly be aware of what comes in that needs to and what comes in that doesn’t.

Today, I want to share three ways that a clothing swap is minimalistic and sustainable and encourage you to be brave and be willing to give clothing swaps a try.

Minimalism and Sustainability in Fashion Clothing Swaps

CLOTHING SWAPS OFFER A FREE ROTATING WARDROBE

You could literally replace your entire wardrobe at each and every swap without ever buying a thing! In this way, it makes the transition to minimalistic concepts like capsule wardrobes more enjoyable because you are getting access to many more items without ever having to actually purchase them. Just pay your upfront fee for swapping, but there is no per cost item at a clothing swap.

LESSEN OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

By using items that already exist, you are avoiding contributing to unnecessary increases in production, which pollutes our planet. One thing that I learned in the documentary is that because of increased production, there is already an unsafe balance of pollutants in the air that we breathe. Think about where we will be in 5 years, 10 years, 50 years if this continues. By trading items at a clothing swap that are still in great shape and someone else can use, we are lessening the environmental impact by getting full use out of what has already been produced, instead of going out and buying something new.

ARE SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE

This falls along the same lines as thrifting and buying secondhand or consignment items. In this way, we are not only using items that already exist instead of purchasing, but we are also supporting a culture, like the thrifting culture, that encourages reuse of items. The bonus here is that many of these types of organizations, like our Trendy Trade Clothing Swaps, also work to benefit great causes, such a women in need.

Favorite Clothing Swap Finds

My favorite clothing swap finds! Today I’ll be sharing some of my personal favorites found at Trendy Trade Clothing Swap Events. (Click the image below to watch video.)
favorite clothing swap finds

First I want to say thank you if you have ever been to a Trendy Trade! If you haven’t, I want to encourage you to be brave and be willing to give it a try this year!

For all of us, it can be scary to try something new, especially if you have no idea what you are getting in to. I am hoping that through these videos, you can check us out in advance and start to feel comfortable with the idea of a clothing swap.

Every single one of us there is in the same boat as you – we are cleaning out our closets and bringing it all to the event – and then searching for our new favorite finds. Everyone comes to have a great time and get great stuff and that’s why we are all there. I think sometimes we think things up in our head like, “Am I going to get judged?” Or, “Will anyone like my stuff? Or “Is my stuff good enough?” and I promise you – no one there is thinking that. All the clothes are screened in private after you drop them off at registration and no one knows who brought what.

If you have never been to Trendy Trade before, I would encourage you to just be willing to give just one event a try! There are a lot of benefits to coming to a clothing swap:

CLOTHING SWAP BENEFITS

  • Most inexpensive way to get new clothes
  • Meet like-minded women and make new friends
  • Get a new wardrobe in under 2 hours (faster than shopping!)
  • Do some good while having fun (everything is donated to women in our community that need it.)
  • Help women locally and globally (in addition to donating to women in our community, we partner with international organizations committed to rescuing people from trafficking)
  • Walk away with hundreds of dollars in new clothes for just $20!
  • Something fun and unique to do – it’s a great experience!

So now that you know everything you can get for coming to a clothing swap, check out our upcoming events on the event page on our website or our Facebook page. Be brave, RSVP and join us soon!

Next, I want to share some of my personal favorites that have come through Trendy Trade so that you can see what to expect when you attend a clothing swap with us.

We do get a lot of name brand items at the swaps, the ones I am going to show you today might not necessarily be name brands but are still recognizable, in great shape and cute so we accept them into the swaps. For me personally, when I am deciding what to wear, I don’t look at brand as much as I do fit and quality. For me, it’s more important to feel confident in what I am wearing more than I care about the brand.

My Favorite Clothing Swap Finds

Find #1 – The first item I want to show you is one that you may have seen on one of my other videos, (Shop by Fit, Not Size) but I absolutely adore this one. This one is polyester, rayon and spandex. It’s tan colored with a black floral lace pattern that looks like an overlay but isn’t. French darts are sewn in from the waist up and then from the waist down there is a little bit of a flare to the skirt. It has short sleeves and zips up the back. Something like this you would get for $25 originally at Forever 21.

Find #2 – The next item I absolutely love is this pair of slingback heels. I always try to have a neutral pair of heels in my closet. They are my go-to shoes for anytime daytime casual outfit – they are great to just dress it up a little bit. Any shoes that come in to Trendy Trade need to be new or in like-new condition. This brand (Style & Co) is one you would find at Macy’s. These originally retail for about $50. If you were to buy them used on an app like Poshmark, they’d go for about $25 in this condition (like-new).

Find #3 – This next item I would have as a wardrobe staple. It’s a denim colored button up shirt from GAP. Their boyfriend fit shirts range from $50-$60, you could catch one on sale for about $35. This is great for layering and is a very light material so can be worn year-round. This is a wardrobe basic and will never go out of style. You can dress this up a little bit. I’d pair it with a brightly colored (maybe yellow) belt around the waist around the top of the shirt and a black infinity scarf. I think would be absolutely adorable.

Find #4 – The next item that I want to share with you that I love is this maroon and black striped pencil skirt from Forever 21. This could be worn so many different ways, either pair with a black t-shirt and multi-stranded necklace for a casual outfit. Or, if you wanted to wear it to the office, maybe pair it with a black button-up collared shirt. It has elastic around the waist and zips up the back. Forever 21 is selling something similar, but not exactly the same, right now for $11. I found similar items on Poshmark that were originally about $20, selling for $10 used.

Keep Your Closet Organized

Keep your closet organized with these top three tips to help ease frustration each morning as you get ready and also keep items in your wardrobe from wearing out quickly. (Click image below to watch video.)

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

Everyone’s closet and the space you have to work with is a little bit different. Walk-in or no walk-in — or separate room entirely — the closet organization tips that I will be sharing with you today will work for you regardless of the space that you have to work with.

Starting your day is a lot less stressful when you can walk into a closet and clearly see all of your options – as if your clothes are sitting there just waiting for you. The tips I’ll be sharing with you today are the ones that I use to

Keep your closet organized with these three tips:

  • Color coordinate
  • Stuff your stuff (boots & purses)
  • Keep jewelry at bay

Tip #1: Color coordinate

The best way to find something quickly in your closet is to search for the color. If you have everything grouped together by color, you’ll know right where to look as opposed to having to search through your entire closet for one little item.

I color coordinate my closet and it is sorted into chunks of black, gray, white and then blues, reds, purples, yellows, oranges and beige. This helps me know right where to look when I need to find an item. And I know if it is not there, then it is likely in the hamper waiting to be washed and I don’t have to search my entire closet for it. Once laundry is done, I hang everything clean back up in the color block that it belongs to.

Keep Your Closet Organized Color Coordinate

Color coordinating your closet is easier than you think and is initially a one time project that you can take the time to invest in up front and then maintain over time by keeping up on top of it each time you put clean clothes back into your closet.

Tip #2: Stuff your stuff (boots & purses)

The word “stuff” is one of my least favorite words, but I am going to use it here anyways. Stuff refers to boots and purses and keeping these stuffed will help how your closet looks when everything is displayed. It also gives that “new” feeling, like everything in your closet is straight out of the store, as well as keep your purses and boots in great condition over time.

Keep Your Closet Organized Stuff Your Purse

To stuff your purses, use tissue paper or even bags that you have laying around the house. Once stuffed, line them up on the shelf and enjoy how nicely they stay there!

To stuff your boots, use old magazines. Roll one up and put down inside the leg of the boot. This will keep your boots standing upright and also prevent creases and wear on the exterior fabric that would otherwise cause your boots to wear out faster.

Tip #3: Keep jewelry at bay

Who wants to dig through a tangled up mess of necklaces, bracelets and earrings each morning when you are in a rush to get ready for work? One of the best decisions I made to help organize my closet was to invest in a jewelry armoire. My favorite is the stand-up with a full-length mirror on the front. Once you open it up, there is a place for everything and everything is in its place. No more digging through a dresser top jewelry box searching for just the right thing. Necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings are right there where you can see them and grab them quickly and go.

Keep Your Closet Organized Jewelry Armoire Mirror Keep Your Closet Organized Jewelry Armoire Door   Keep Your Closet Organized Jewelry Armoire Inside

Try one or all three of these tips to keep your closet organized and you’ll look better, feel better and encounter more relaxing and less stressful mornings each day as you are getting ready.

How To Get Ready Fast!

How to get ready fast and still look gorgeous! In this video I’ll share my top time-saving technique for dressing in no time flat each morning, saving yourself the time and frustration that normally comes with scrambling through your closet each morning. Plus, I also have a few more trendy trade Clothing Swap Event finds to share with you. If you have a super busy week ahead of you and half your morning routine consists of deciding what to wear, or changing in and out of outfits until half your closet is torn apart, then you’ll want to read on! I will be sharing my secrets for how to get ready fast, dress in no time flat and still look gorgeous!

Life is busy now and we are constantly taking on more, adding more to our plates, trying to please more people all the while promising ourselves that we’ll continue to chase that ever elusive “balance” that we all seek in our lives. When we get busier one of the first things to go is how we take care of ourselves and taking good care of ourselves. So, I want to encourage you with some tips below. I also want to let you know that it is ok to give yourself permission to spend a little time making sure you are ready to head into your day and these tips will help you with that as well.

If you have watched my video on What Is Closet Shopping? then you’ll already have a head start on how to get ready fast, but if you haven’t, no big deal, you can pick it up from here and run with it.

Believe me, I would love nothing more than to slick my hair back and throw on a pair of yoga pants every day (and a lot of days I do!) But for those days when life requires a little bit more from us, here are a few tips:

How To Get Ready Fast | Tip #1: Think about your week ahead

The first thing you will want to do is think about your week ahead. Are you going to be in an office? Running errands? Taking care of the kids? If you wear a uniform to work, what is life before and after work like? Just take a few short minutes to think about what the week ahead will hold, so that you can best plan outfits that will go with the activities ahead that week.

How To Get Ready Fast | Tip #2: Set an area for staging

Next, set an area for staging. If you have a large wall in your bedroom like a hallway near the closet or even in your closet itself, you could use that for your staging area. If you don’t have a large wall, then the front of your closet is fine, just hang the items on the clothing bar or rod that you already have hanging. Of course, you have to first clear the space in your closet to be able to do that, so if you haven’t already you may want to head over to my video on How To Clean Out Your Closet after reading this.

In your staging area, you are going to want to have hooks on the wall  (if you are using a wall) or ways to attach or group together hangers and different items if you are using the rod in your closet as your staging area. If you look on Pinterest, you’ll see lots of different ideas on how to do this — one of them being pop tabs to attach hangers.

How To Get Ready Fast | Tip #3: Select your outfits for the week

So, after you’ve thought about your week ahead and chosen an area for staging, then you are going to want to start selecting your outfits for the week. And set them in order; Mon, Tues, Wed, and so on. Begin with the main item that will be your wardrobe basic and then work around that. So, you’ll want to select the item that you will wear on Monday and put it on the first hook. Then, repeat for each day.

After you have the main piece up, start adding the complimentary wardrobe items and accessories around it. This would be everything, from leggings, jackets and scarves to belts, necklaces, rings and even undergarments. I know this seems excessive, but what it is going to help you do is make sure that you have everything you need as you head into your week and prevent you from having to get halfway dressed and then undressed and starting all over again just because the right undergarment isn’t cleaned or you can’t find the right color leggings. Again, it is going to save you so much time in your week.

How To Get Ready Fast | Tip #4: Have a few backups

So what happens if you get to Thursday and say the outfit you had picked out doesn’t go with how you’re feeling that day? When you are staging, you will also want to have a few backups. I would have two main ones: a nicer outfit and a more casual outfit. This is because even though we might do our best to plan based on what we know will happen that week, but things always come up last minute and it’s really those last minute plans that can make us really have to scramble. So having a dressier backup as well as a casual backup can help take some more of the stress out of your week.

If you get through your week and didn’t need the backups, great! You either have a head start on staging your wardrobe for the next week or you have backups ready all the time.

I know this all seems crazy and like it will take a huge chunk of time to do, but think about this — how much time do you waste each morning trying to put everything together? Now, that time is sectioned off differently in your week as prep time rather than getting ready time. The other huge benefit to this is that it will save you from scrambling through your closet each morning trying to hunt down those leggings or that scarf, or your missing bracelet, and then having to start all over again because you can’t find the final item to complete the outfit you’ve already chosen. So again, I know it seems like it is going to be time consuming to do this, but actually it will save you time and a lot of frustration getting ready in the morning as you take on your week.

This can get a little addicting, so you may become overly ambitious and get carried away and start on a 2nd or 3rd week. If you try any of the tips from this blog or have any questions, be sure to write that in the comments right below. I’d love to hear it!

Keep Your Closet Clean (Once & For All!)

Keep your closet clean once and for all by putting it through these three tests shown in today’s video: The Hanger Test, The Hamper Test or The Hanging Test. (Click the image below to watch the video.)

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

I’ve shared some closet cleaning tips and tricks in other videos recently, so now that you have spent a ton of time cleaning out your closet, how do you finally keep it clean once and for all?!

Clothes, shoes, purses and accessories have their way of creeping into our closets, whether through impulse buys, receiving gifts or therapy shopping – and our well-intentioned closet cleaning just went down the tubes and we jam pack more and more into our wardrobe.

So how do you keep your closet clean once you have taken the time to go through it all? There are lots of different suggestions out there that you can follow, today, I want to share the tips that I use to keep my closet under control.

keep your closet clean

Keep Your Closet Clean – The Hanger Test

Go into your closet and turn all the hangers backwards. Mark a date on your calendar where you want to go back into your closet and check the hangers. This could be a few weeks to a few months out or even a year. In the meantime, anytime you wear something, put it back on the hanger and hang the hanger in your closet as you normally would. On the date you have picked, go back into your closet and remove all the items that are left on the backwards hangers. Those are the items that you haven’t used in the period of time you set for yourself and can go ahead and clean out of your closet.

Keep Your Closet Clean – The Hamper Test

The hamper test is one of the best ways that I have found to monitor what I am using and what I am not. If you typically do laundry once per week, go 2-3 weeks (or even 4 if you can stand it) without doing laundry. In that period of time, anything that you wear goes into the hamper once you are done with it. At the end of your 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 4 weeks, see what you have left hanging in your closet. These are the items that you most likely rarely (if ever use) and are probably safe to get rid of.

Keep Your Closet Clean – The Hanging Test

My last test is the hanging test. How well can you see the items that you have hanging in your closet? If your answer is “Not very well,” then most likely you are failing the hanging test. Items that are out of sight, out of mind are less likely to get used. So the more crowded your closet is, the less you are likely using the items in it. For the hanging test, make sure that everything is actually hanging in your closet, versus being packed in so tightly that they are pushed up against each other. If your items, aren’t hanging, then it’s time to clean out your closet. See our closet cleaning video for more tips.

So give one of these a try! Whether it’s the hanger test, the hamper test or the hanging test, one of these or even all three will help keep your closet happy and help you to keep your closet cleaned and organized once and for all!

When you are cleaning out your closet, you actually have more options than just bagging everything up and dropping it off at the local thrift chain on the corner. You can turn items you no longer use into items you will love, at Trendy Trade Clothing Swap Events. Today we will cover closet cleaning tips that help you make the most of what you already have and get the most for the money you have already spent. These tips will also help you not to keep something in your closet that doesn’t need to stay there, simply because you don’t know what else to do with it!

According to the Council for Textile Recycling’s website, the average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing and textiles per year. With Trendy Trade, we give you another option other than keeping, donating or throwing away — that is swapping!

Closet Cleaning Tips: Ask Yourself These 3 Questions

Next time you are getting ready to clean out your closet, go into the project with these questions in mind:

  • Will I use this? If so, keep it.
  • Is this still in great shape but I won’t use it? If so, swap it.
  • Is this item worn out? If so, recycle it.

Closet Cleaning Tips

If items are in your closet getting regular use, keep them in your closet! You know which ones these are because they are either on you or in your hamper right now waiting to be washed!

Closet Cleaning Tips: Swap or Recycle Instead!

For other items that are in your closet that are in great shape, but are too big or too small or maybe you bought it on clearance and can’t return it – these are great items to bring to a Trendy Trade and swap for new-to-you items that you will love.

If an item is outdated or totally and completely worn out, look for a textile recycling facility in your area, or if there isn’t one, check around to the local thrift stores to find one that recycles or reuses fabrics that come in.

Make it your goal to no longer throw anything away. Second to that, make it your goal to turn what you no longer use into something that you will! You can do that at an upcoming Trendy Trade event. Visit our Facebook page or subscribe to our newsletter for upcoming event details.

Trendy Trade is all about repurposing and taking something that someone has no more use for and rehoming it and giving it a new life. When you are cleaning out your closet, keep today’s tips in mind and it will help you make the most of what you already have!

Dressing For Your Body Type

Dressing for your body type usually comes with a long list of do’s and don’ts. But today, I am simplifying the rules by sharing one simple trick for dressing for your body type to help you achieve confidence in your look.

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

You have probably heard different tips over the years about how to dress for your body type and if the rules seem too lengthy or complicated, I have one simple trick that I’ll be sharing today that will help you dress for your body type, no matter what shape you are.

Body type or body shape can get very complicated and detailed. Of course, there is no way to put every single woman on the planet into a few main categories, so for the sake of simplicity, we are going to use five basic body shapes for illustration purposes today.

Hourglass | Triangle (Pear) | Inverted Triangle | Apple | Rectangle

Dressing for your body type has less to do with your weight than it does with your structure. Every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful and using this simple trick for dressing for your body type that I am going to share with you, will help you achieve confidence in your look.

Dressing For Your Body Type – One Simple Trick

The one simple trick is this: Attract attention to the part of your body that is smaller and detract from the part of your body that is larger. And in just a minute I am going to explain the “how” of that.

But first, by “attracting attention”, let me tell you what I do mean and let me tell you what I do not mean. What I do mean is to use fabrics, textures, patterns and colors to attract attention to the smaller half of your body. What I don’t mean, is to attract attention by using less fabric (if you catch my drift.) The goal in all of this is to achieve balance in your overall look and do so in a sophisticated way.

For a lot of you, you already know what your body shape is, but if you need help in determining what your body shape is, we are not going to cover that today – we’ll save it for another time, but in the meantime, jump on and do a quick Google search for those resources. There are a lot of good ones out there that will help you take measurements or give you other tips and tricks for determining your shape.

Dressing for your body type – The How

The overall goal of dressing for your body type is not only looking as fab as you can of course and feel great as you go through your day, but mainly to achieve that “hourglass” look. That’s considered (visually speaking) the perfect body shape so if you are starting out as an hourglass figure, then you have one up on the rest of us. If you are an hourglass, the goal then becomes not to lose that balanced look as you select what to put on.

If you are any of the other four shapes, the goal is to use fabrics, textures, patterns and colors placed in strategic places to help you achieve that perfect balanced, hourglass look no matter your body shape.

So, yes, you can do it! And no it’s not as complicated as you would think! In fact, you might find after today’s tutorial that you are already doing a lot of these subconsciously, because that is what looks good and maybe today will just help explain more of the “why” you are subconsciously doing it. So let’s get started!

Dressing For Your Body Type: Remember our one simple trick

Attract attention to the part of your body that is smaller and detract from the part of your body that is larger.

How to attract attention: use fabrics, textures, patterns, colors and certain cuts of fabric placed in strategic places

How to detract attention: Use dark or solid colors or larger cuts of fabric to cover or help detract attention from larger areas of your body

Dressing For Your Body Type: One simple trick applied to a triangle (pear)

A pear shaped body is smaller on top, larger on bottom. This simple trick applied to a pear shape, to help achieve balance and work toward that hourglass look, is to attract attention to the top through use of fabrics, textures, patterns, colors and detract attention from the bottom by using dark or solid colors. Applying this simple trick helps to create the illusion of an hourglass figure on a pear shaped body.

dressing for your body type pear shape

Sample outfit: a floral top and black jeans would look great on a pear shape

The exact opposite would be true for an inverted triangle shaped body. Remember, our one simple trick: Attract attention to the part of your body that is smaller and detract from the part of your body that is larger.

Dressing For Your Body Type: One simple trick applied to an inverted triangle

Detract attention to the top and attract attention to the lower half of the body. Use solid colors to detract attention on top and balance it out by using patterns and colors on bottom. This could be a black top with colored skinny jeans. Putting the solid, dark color on top detracts attention and putting the brighter color on bottom attracts attention, thereby balancing out the body shape of the inverted triangle, that otherwise typically wider on top and smaller on bottom.

dressing for your body type inverted triangle

Sample outfit: A dark colored top and brightly colored jeans would look great on this body shape

Dressing For Your Body Type: One simple trick applied to an apple shape

If we apply our one simple trick to an apple shape, and work towards the illusion of an hourglass shape, the goal is to detract attention from the middle and attract attention to the top and bottom. This could look like a big chunky brightly-colored necklace on top, solid dark top and a ruffle edge knee length skirt on bottom. The ruffles on the bottom of the skirt will draw attention downward at the same time the brightly colored chunky necklace draws attention up, helping to create the illusion of balance and achieve that hourglass figure.

dressing for your body type apple shape

Sample outfit: Attract attention up and down with a chunky necklace up top and a ruffled skirt

Dressing For Your Body Type: One simple trick applied to an apple shape

What this looks like on a rectangle: a rectangle is evenly portioned and similar to an hourglass with the exception of a defined waist. If we apply our one simple trick to a rectangle shape, we will want to draw attention to the waist. A brightly colored belt in the middle of muted colors on top and bottom, will help create the illusion of a waist and help you work towards that hourglass shape.

Of course, there are many more tips and tricks to dress for your body shape and we will take a look at more in the future. My goal today is to (without overly complicating the process or causing confusion) give you one simple trick to help you take the next step in dressing for your body shape.

How To Clean Out Your Closet

How to clean out your closet quickly and easily! If the thought of cleaning out your closet brings on overwhelming feelings of guilt for buying too much or anxiety of not knowing where to begin, then this video is for you. In this video, I’ll share three quick and easy steps to get you started on cleaning out your closet. The good news is we have a few trendy trade Clothing Swap Events right around the corner for you to get rid of things you no longer use and trade them for things you will! (Click the image below to play video.)

It sounds like such a daunting task — cleaning out your closet — but with just a few quick and easy tips, I hope to help you breakdown this task so it is a little less overwhelming, rewarding actually and helps you make the most of what you already have.

Go through each of the three steps, one at a time, that I’ll be sharing with you here and when you’re done, you’ll have everything ready to go for the next trendy trade Clothing Swap Event that you attend. Plus, you’ll find space in your closet for all your new favorite finds you are sure to bring home with you from the next clothing swap!

How To Clean Out Your Closet | Step 1: Purge

This doesn’t take long and, in fact, should be done quickly. Start at one end of your closet and work your way across (left to right) and then top to bottom, looking for items that are completely worn out and not usable. If beyond repair, these items should go directly into a pile you set aside for recycling. If you do a Google search, you can try to find a location near you that takes textiles for recycling or find a company that accepts the fabric for reuse.

How To Clean Out Your Closet | Step 2: Filter

After you’ve purged, then you’ll want to go back through your closet paying a little more attention to what you are getting rid of. Follow the same pattern and work the same way as before (left to right and then top to bottom) and filter out items that are still in good condition, but no longer fit. This is where painful realism comes into play. If it is too big or too small, the item should go directly into your swapping pile. If an item has sentimental value, store it, but free up the space in your closet.

How To Clean Out Your Closet | Step 3: Match

With the work you’ve completed so far, the items left in your closet should be usable items that fit you well. Double check what you’ve done by “closet shopping” and putting together outfits for yourself in advance of needing to wear them. This will also help you take inventory of what items you need to get to complete an outfit or look. Then, be on the lookout for those items at the next trendy trade Clothing Swap Event.

My hope is that these few quick and easy closet cleaning tips will help you make the most of what you already have and then also give you a head start on filtering through your closet so you have a bag ready to go when you attend your next trendy trade Clothing Swap Event.

What Is Closet Shopping?

What is closet shopping? Before you buy another thing at the store, mall or online, watch this video! I’ll explain the basics and benefits of shopping your own closet, rediscovering your wardrobe and refreshing your look, without buying a thing. These tips and tricks will also help you as you get your items ready for swapping at the next trendy trade. (Click the image below to play video.)

We have all had that feeling or that day where we open up our closets and think, “I have nothing to wear!” Our closets are overstuffed and bursting at the seams with options, yet we stand there and stare, with a blank look on our face, feeling a little lost about what all those options are. If that has been you at some point too, read on as I help you make the most of what you already have by teaching you about what is closet shopping and how to do it.

What is closet shopping?

Closet shopping is hitting your closet before you hit the mall and rediscovering things to wear or discovering new ways to wear things you already have. If you closet shop instead of store shop, or closet shop before store shopping, you’ll find that you don’t really need to buy what you thought you did. It will also help you to buy less. By taking inventory of what you already have, you’ll see maybe it’s just a piece or two you need to add to your wardrobe, not really five new outfits.

Benefits of closet shopping

There are many benefits to closet shopping, here are just a few:

  • Save money – by making the most of what you already have
  • Save time – by pre-arranging outfits, which we will talk more about in a minute, you will have several ready-to-go options as you head into your week, saving you time each morning
  • Save space – once you determine what is actually usable in your closet and what isn’t, you can get rid of the items that aren’t working for you anymore – by maybe bringing them to trendy trade – and free up some space in your closet
  • It’s fun! Closet shopping is a perfect opportunity for some quality time with your daughter, mom, sister or friend. If you don’t feel confident enough in your styling abilities, call up a friend you trust enough to come give their opinion and make an evening of it.

What is closet shopping? A couple more things to know

Think about when you were in school and your mom made you pick out your clothes the night before. It’s kind of like that, only the grown-up version.

Also, taking just a little bit of time to shop your own closet occasionally can take that overwhelming feeling away that you get either when you walk into your closet because it is stuffed full or when you walk into your closet each day as you are trying to pick out what to wear.

If you are planning on coming to the next trendy trade Clothing Swap Event, you will want to make closet shopping a priority between now and then because it will allow you to get rid of those items that are truly no longer any use to you, clean them out of your closet and bring them to the next trendy trade. Plus, once you have your new outfits planned from your closet after closet shopping, it will allow you to see what items you do need to be on the search for to complete your wardrobe and then those are the items you can hunt down at the next trendy trade Clothing Swap Event.

Make it your goal to assign everything in your wardrobe to an outfit. The misfits at the end are the items you should get rid of. They are just taking up space, crowding your life and collecting dust. Bring them to the next trendy trade and trade them for items you will actually use or if trendy trade isn’t in your area yet, donate them to local women in need.

What is closet shopping? The basics

Next, now that we have covered what is closet shopping and the benefits, let’s talk about how to closet shop and break it down to the basics.

  • When you are closet shopping, you are going to consider every item of clothing, plus shoes, purses, hats, scarves (other accessories) and your jewelry.
  • The very first thing I do is set sentimental items aside. I’m not someone that is attached to very many items, so this works for me. If you are someone that is sentimental about everything you have, you may have to take a longer look at this. But basically, these are the items that although you may not wear them often, if at all, you would never let go of (family heirlooms, baby shoes, special gifts, wedding dress.) Keep sentimental items. These do not get included in your closet shopping process.
  • Next, start with putting together your most frequently worn outfits. These are the quick and easy outfits to put together. You know them well because you are washing them every week or two and get lots of use out of them.
  • Lastly, get rid of anything that doesn’t fit. I know this is hard to hear, but if it is not in active use (the exception being sentimental items) you don’t need it. In this day and age — and especially with trendy trade – if it is something that you end up needing later, there are always cheap places to buy it or something similar will end up coming back around like it at trendy trade. In the meantime, you don’t need it cluttering up your closet, crowding up your life and collecting dust. Pass it on to someone you know will use it or needs it now.

When you are closet shopping and throughout this whole process, find a place to put everything as you work your way through your closet. You can either hang each outfit in your closet, or lay each outfit on your bed. Be sure to include all of the accessories with it – shoes, purse, earrings, necklace, everything that you put on to pull the outfit together. Don’t leave anything out.

What is closet shopping? A step-by-step how to

Now that you have set sentimental items aside, pulled out your quick and easy outfits and then gotten rid of anything that doesn’t fit, what you have left is more or less all of the pieces of the puzzle that you are going to start putting together.

  • Item-by-item go through your closet and start putting outfits together.
  • Look for new possibilities (i.e. dresses that can be worn as tops as seen in our previous video, “Why to Shop by Fit, Not Size”)
  • Look for different combinations (One pair of jeans goes with 10 different tops. Lay out the pair of jeans and then surround it with the 10 tops, plus the shoes, purses and accessories to go with it.)
  • Repeat

Keep working your way through this process, along with the help of your friend or family member that has so graciously agreed to do this with you. Just keep going until you’ve made it through most everything in your closet.

Filter the misfits = Keep the basics – Trade the randoms

At the end, you are going to have a few misfits. This could be a little black dress, that maybe you have assigned the shoes, purse and jewelry to other outfits, but you know what you have that will go with it, so keep the little black dress because that is a good basic item to have in your wardrobe.

If you have any other random items leftover, try to find a “home” for them by assigning them to an outfit. If there is no possible way you can assign it to anything because you have absolutely nothing to go with it, then you have a choice to make. Do you want to accumulate more by either shopping or trading all the necessary pieces to turn that into an outfit? Or do you want to swap or donate it?

Closet shopping is the perfect place to start when cleaning out your closet for a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event. It is going to help you make the most of what you already have, get some mileage out of your closet and then help you know what to be on the look out for at the next clothing swap you attend.

How to Host a Clothing Swap

Learn how to host a clothing swap of your own with these quick and easy tips. I’ll share a few tips on organizing events that we have learned the past 5 years with trendy trade. Plus, I’ll share three more clothing swap finds so you know what you can expect to see at upcoming events! (Click image below to play video.)

READY TO FLIP YOUR FASHION?Click here to check availability for upcoming events in your area!

We’ve been hosting trendy trade Clothing Swap Events for over 5 years and have learned a lot in that time about what works and what doesn’t. So, today I’ll be sharing some information with you that will help if you decide you want to learn how to host a clothing swap of your own.

When we put on a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event, one of our main goals is to get a group of ladies together and connect everyone and see what happens. Many times really wonderful things happen when wonderful ladies get together, so that is always a thrill to see. On top of that, we get to clean out our closets, free up some space, and go home with great new finds. If all that isn’t enough, everything left goes to a local organization that helps single moms in need. It’s a way to help other women in your community at the same time. That’s why we say “do some good while having fun.”

Those are all of the reasons that we love trendy trade, but the truth is that anyone can host a clothing swap event anywhere they want to, anytime, so if that is something you are thinking of doing, here are a few tips:

  • Invite friends
  • Set some ground rules
  • Keep the swap simple
  • Have fun
  • Find someone to benefit

Invite friends at least 2 weeks in advance

If you are planning to invite your friends, send out invitations at least 2 weeks in advance. If it is just friends, family or friends of friends, you can host the clothing swap in your house. Designate a room or area in your house where you will put everything. Have places for trying on and plenty of full-length mirrors available for everyone to use. (Make sure to clear out your home décor from the room or anything that you wouldn’t want to accidentally get swapped!) Giving everyone at least 2 weeks notice on the invite gives your friends time to prepare and clean out their closets.

Set some ground rules

Next, you’ll want to set clear expectations for your guests so everyone knows what to bring and what to expect. Some of the things we recommend are: types of items to bring, level of cleanliness, timeline for the evening, and swapping rules for fairness. Creating a few ground rules will help set the tone for the swap and help everyone know what to expect.

Keep the swap simple

You can use the things you already have in your house to hang and display the clothing. Ask friends if they have anything you can borrow to help display items for the swap. Tables, chairs and coats racks all make excellent places to lay or hang clothing for display. Put out a few snacks and refreshments, just keep it simple.

Have fun!

Most importantly have fun! Ladies love a reason to get together and this is the perfect excuse to get out of the house, have some fun and help other women at the same time.

Find someone to benefit

Lastly, find someone to benefit. There are going to be items left at the end and ask the ladies there if they mind if anything leftover is donated to a local charity. A lot of thrift stores and charities are used to getting things people don’t want and a lot of times that means things that even the stores and charities don’t want — so it’s nice to help a place that needs it by giving them some of the really nice things that are generated at the clothing swap that you host with you and your friends.

I hope you have found these tips on learning how to host a clothing swap of your own helpful. Don’t forget to click the video above to learn more on how to host a clothing swap, plus see more trendy trade Clothing Swap Event finds!

Shop by Fit, Not Size

Shop by fit, not size. In this video, I’ll explain why by showing one trendy trade Clothing Swap find styled three different ways. I’ll also help answer the question, “What sizes do you have at trendy trade?” Plus, I have three more clothing swap finds to share with you as examples of what you will see at upcoming events. (Click image below to play video.)

One of the most frequently asked questions we get about trendy trade is, “What sizes do you have?” Typically we get a really nice range of sizes so there usually always ends up being something for everyone. We will always encourage you to shop by fit, not by size at trendy trade Clothing Swap Events for several reasons:

  • Every brand has different sizing
  • Washing & drying changes the size
  • Items can be worn many different ways

So, to show you the advantages of shopping by fit, not by size, in the video above I’ll show you one trendy trade Clothing Swap find styled three different ways. The main piece that I’ll be styling for you is from Forever 21.

shop by fit not size at trendy trade

As we all know, you can find items there on both ends of the quality spectrum. I have some pieces from there that wore out very quickly and got holes and I have other pieces from there that have lasted years and I love wearing regularly. This one is polyester, rayon and spandex. It’s tan colored with a black floral lace pattern that looks like an overlay but actually isn’t. French darts are sewn in from the waist up and then from the waist down there is a little bit of a flare to the skirt. It has short sleeves and zips up the back.

The reason I chose this piece is that while this was likely originally intended as a dress, the most common way I wear it is as a top. This is also the reason I encourage you to shop by fit, and not by size when you come to a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event. Someone a little smaller, or with a different body shape, would probably be able to get away with wearing this as a dress. For me, it’s too short to wear as a dress, but makes a great top. That’s why we’ll always encourage you to shop by fit and not by size because the same item can be styled different for different people depending on your body type.

So the three ways I’ll style this for you today are:

  • Casual day out
  • Down to business
  • Bundled up for fall.

Casual day out

For casual day out, I have this styled with a pair of skinny jeans, a beautiful vintage style necklace, big pearl earrings and neutral heels and matching purse. By the way, the purse and shoes were also trendy trade Clothing Swap Event finds! Styled this way, the dress makes a beautiful top that is easy to throw on and go for a casual outing or if you just want to look good while running errands.

Down to business

For down to business, I have this styled as a dress, with a black jacket, black heels, statement earrings and bracelets. Depending on your office environment, you could also pair it with a pencil skirt or black dress pants.

Bundled up for fall

For bundled up for fall, I have this styled with a black cardigan, black scarf, black leggings and boots. The layers will keep you fashionably warm while you are on a fall outing and this is a super cute way to extend the use of your summer dresses into the fall.

So whether it is for a casual day out, getting down to business or bundling up for fall, this one dress can be worn those three ways and help you make the most of what you already have in your wardrobe or might find at an upcoming trendy trade Clothing Swap Event.

Recently, I started these videos as a way to give you some insight into the trendy trade Clothing Swap Event culture and what it’s all about and to show you some of the clothing and accessories that come through the events so you can see what to expect. Once you are comfortable with seeing why we do what we do and how we do it, then maybe you will decide to join us at an upcoming clothing swap event. If you want to learn a little more about how a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event works, after reading this, hop on over to the video “Three Clothing Swap Finds, Power of Color and About trendy trade.”

I have had a lot of big life changes over the last couple years and it has completely taken a toll on my wardrobe. My closet has become this “patchwork quilt” of fabric of sorts filled with all these different styles. Now, I have just been experimenting with trying to figure out what my style is currently. Just when I think I know what direction I am going, the seasons change or new trends are announced or another life change happens and I have to figure it all out all over again.

The other day, I heard a former fashion designer being interviewed and one of the things he said was that he didn’t believe in trends, he believed that you need to find out who you are and what suits you and dress according to that. Once I heard that, all the pressure was off and it got it me thinking about what I liked, what I felt comfortable in and what I felt good in. So that’s my new direction and I want to share these three tips with you if you are struggling to find your style:

  • Find your favorite colors on you
  • Find the outfit you feel confident in and copy that
  • Feel free to experiment

Reclaim Your Style – Tip 1: Find your favorite colors on YOU

How many of us are guilty of looking in our closet and seeing a chunk of white, a chunk of gray and a chunk of black? So that’s great because those colors go with everything, and that was me for a long time too. But I never felt like it matched my personality or really went with who I was. My sister sent me a necklace one day and it was a soft, bright turquoise color and when I tried it on, I loved it. It was nothing I would ever buy for myself, but once I had it, I started to experiment with adding other colors to my wardrobe.

trendy trade Clothing Swap Events are really a great place to experiment, because you have dozens of ladies with all different styles, all different tastes bringing everything together and you can literally go through everything there and try it all on if you want or take it home with you and then you can also begin to find new favorite colors that you like on you.

Reclaim Your Style – Tip 2: Find the outfit in your closet you feel confident in and copy that

For a very long time for me, especially when I was in the fashion jewelry business for several years and then moved into the corporate world, my go-to outfit was a sheath dress and black jacket. I loved it, I felt great in it. It always gave me a polished look and I always got compliments. So I had a couple black jackets and lots of sheath dresses and I never had to think or worry about what I was going to wear. That was just “it” for me for that point in time in my life — my confidence outfit. If you go to your closet, you can easily point out the one or two outfits in there that every time you put them on you feel like you can take on the world that day. That is your confidence outfit and that is what you should copy.

Reclaim Your Style – Tip 3: Feel free to experiment

In this day and age, there is no right or wrong when it comes to fashion (although I have seen some people wearing some things that I wish I hadn’t!) But seriously, NOW anything goes. Again, this is another really great reason to join us at a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event, because we are literally putting hundreds of items in front of you at each event that are the sum of dozens and dozens of ladies closets and it’s your chance to try on things you normally wouldn’t, get feedback from people you can trust and if you take it home and end up loving it, great, keep it! If not, bring it back and swap it for something at the next clothing swap event. But really, trying on new things you typically wouldn’t is one of the best ways to find something new that you might end up loving!

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as the fashion police. You are the one that has to navigate through your life and through your day, so I hope these tips help take some fashion pressure off of you and help you be fully comfortable with who you are as you work to reclaim your style.

Power of Color, About Us & 3 Clothing Swap Finds

Today we’re talking about the power of color in what you wear. I’ll also show you three items you can find at trendy trade Clothing Swap Events. For those of you that are new to trendy trade, I’ll explain what goes on at our clothing swaps. We have done more than 50 events all across the country in the last five years and one thing that I have learned along the way is that some women are braver than others, so I wanted to start doing these videos for a couple reasons:

  1. It gives you some insight into the trendy trade culture and what it’s all about
  2. You’ll be able to see some of the clothing and accessories… tops, dresses, shoes, jewelry, shirts, pants …that are going to be at or have been at a trendy trade
  3. Once you know more about trendy trade and can see the types of items you might be able to expect to get at an event, you’ll feel comfortable enough with it to be brave and come to your first event!

trendy trade: How It Works

If you haven’t yet been to a trendy trade Clothing Swap Event, I want to explain how it works. We pick a date, time and place where we want to have the clothing swap and spread the word — all women are invited to attend. Just clean out your closet with things you don’t use anymore (shoes, purses, dresses, pants, jeans, tops, sweaters, coats, jewelry) and bring them with you – we ask for a minimum of five. You can purchase your ticket online in advance, which helps us to better plan the event and know how many ladies to expect. At some events, tickets are available for purchase at the door. Selling tickets allows us to continue to put on great events for you and helps to cover some of the costs associated with planning the events.

So now that you have cleaned out your closet and brought your items, we ask for just about 30 minutes to get everyone checked in, get all of the items screened and sorted. During that time you can grab a something to eat or drink at the venue and meet some of the other ladies there. One of my favorite parts of the events is seeing ladies that were strangers at the beginning of the event become friends by the end. Once we open it up for swapping, you are able to go through everything that’s there and take whatever you want home with you, typically up to the number of items you brought. So bring 5 take 5, bring 20, take 20.

Supporting women locally

One of the causes near and dear to my heart is helping and supporting single moms, so we will find a local charity along those lines and donate the unclaimed items at the end of the event. Depending on the needs of those organizations, we’ll also carryover some items left at the end of an event to the next trendy trade.

It’s a lot of fun, all the ladies that attend are super nice, nobody judges and nobody bites, so if you haven’t joined us before, please plan to join us in 2017. We’re currently in the process of getting a few events organized in a few different cities, so stay tuned for those details or sign-up for our newsletter to be the first to know when those details are released! Also, if you want to see photos from our events, visit our Facebook page and check out the albums from past events.

Listen to Your Inner Voice

trendy trade clothing swap events inner voice blog There is that still small voice that always guides us into doing the right things and making the right decisions – if you tune into it. That same inner voice also tells us when something does not feel quite right. Listen to it. At several times in my life when I had some tough decisions to make or had to take a leap of faith, I let my decisions be guided by that inner voice, no matter how crazy or outrageous the decision seemed to be at the time.

At those times where that quiet little inner voice was directing me, when I listened, everything went well and was perfect. At times when I didn’t, everything became difficult and challenging. Call it intuitive or spiritual, I’ve learned to listen to it and it has never steered me wrong. That’s not to say that our good decisions don’t sometimes lead us down difficult paths, they certainly can, but in those instances it is for our own development, growth or learning.

If this whole concept makes you nervous, start small. Try the concept out on something trivial—maybe a food or clothing change. Wait until you have mastered it before making a career change or housing move – those are bigger so you want to make sure you are hearing it right. Sometimes you won’t always like what you hear. Sometimes it seems to be guiding you to something completely contradictory than what you had planned for your life. It’s ok.

That voice is there to keep us on the right track and help us along on our path. Life doesn’t come with directions, but we are given that inner voice to guide us along the way. Tune in to it – it’s quieter than all the other voices screaming out for your attention and it will never steer you wrong.

Follow Your Bliss

FOLLOWYOURBLISS

Maybe you are like me and you have worked hard your entire life to make someone else’s dreams come true, all the while neglecting your own. I have certainly done that – over and over again – more times than I care to admit. A shiny, new, great opportunity sneaks its way into my life and I push my dreams aside all the while reasoning that they will be waiting for me later when I am ready.

Whether it is working for great money or working for a great cause, I have fulfilled visions others have laid out. I have worked for big corporations and I have worked to make small differences in the world around me. I have had everything I thought I could ever want – and lost it all. I’ve rebuilt. Somehow through it all, I have managed to maintain this void of my own unfulfilled dreams, while chasing others’ dreams. And chase them hard I did.

At this point in my life, I am certain of one thing. No longer will I run myself into the ground fulfilling dreams and visions of others at the expense of my own. While I would not trade the experiences I have had for anything, it is also time for me to make this declaration for myself: nothing is worth more to me at this point in my life than being the one unique person I know I was created to be and going after that, wholeheartedly, following my bliss.

Big things are ahead and I could not be more excited! If you have traveled any part of this journey with me, I thank you with all of my heart, and am excited to see what this path ahead holds. I may not do it perfectly, but this time at least I know this path ahead is my own. Onward!

Act Wisely and Judge Less

Blog Graphics

At times we all make decisions that we regret. Maybe we were too quick to judge or found out more information later on, that if we had just been patient, would have come to the surface eventually and changed the decision we would have made. We are human, so expect that mistakes will be made and when they are, allow room for forgiveness. Let us make it our goal to more regularly act with wisdom and judge less. Wisdom should be in the foundation of every decision made.

What is the difference between acting with wisdom as opposed to judging? Making a judgment call is, basically stated, categorizing a situation or a person based on your limited knowledge of the circumstances. Wisdom, on the other hand, is preceded by patience and understanding. Wisdom recognizes it does not know all, see all or interpret all correctly. Wisdom also:

• Comes from the heart
• Produces good
• Brings healing
• Takes you where you need to go next

Wisdom, just like any intangible, is always tough to grasp. There is no clear moment when you have grabbed a hold of wisdom. Wisdom is something we constantly grow in — so strive to seek it out. It will not come perfectly every single time, but it is worth striving for.
